Law, like medicine, has become a profession of specialization.
In 1975, the Supreme Court of Texas authorized the Texas Board of Legal Specialization to allow attorneys who have met rigid requirements, including additional training, testing and recommendations from their peers, to be Board Certified in specific areas of law.

Board Certification lasts five years and attorneys must prove their qualifications to be recertified. Out of approximately 72,000 attorneys who are members of the State Bar of Texas, only about 10,200 are Board Certified, and only about 1,240 are certified in Family Law. Jon Michael Franks was one of the first attorneys in Texas to be certified as a Specialist in Family Law.
